About Poker

One of the most interesting and followed games around the world is Poker. It is not just a singular game but is a family of games that consist of many variants and formats like Holdem, Omaha, etc. Poker is played from one single deck consisting of 4 suits which include Spades, Hearts, Diamond and Clubs. The card ranks from Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2. The objective of most variants of poker is to make the best hand consisting of 5 cards. To determine the best hand between the players, fixed hand ranks are used.

Cards

Poker is played with a standard 52-card pack. The cards are categorized into two (Hole and community cards). The combination of 5 cards from hole and community cards is used to make a complete hand in poker.

Hole cards: These cards are not shared with any player during a game and can range from 6 to 2 in numbers. These cards stay face down during the game and are only revealed during a showdown event.
Community cards: These cards are shared amongst all the players in a game and stay face up. They make up the board in the centre of the table and hence are also known as table cards.

Chips

A chip is either a small disk or a brick that is used in place of real money as in-game currency for poker games. Since notes are difficult to maintain or handle, most poker games play with chips because of their durability and their unfirm size and weight. Blinds and Position

The minimum bet value that a player has to place in a game is known as blinds. Position is an order or arrangement in which the players of a poker game sit around the table. Forced Bets

Different positions on a table

The arrangement of seating plan on a poker table is categorized into three position categories:-

Early Positions: Early positions are the first four positions on the poker table and out of these positions, the first two are forced bet positions. The small blind, Big blind, Under the Gun (UTG) and UTG + 1 are early positions in a 9-max table.
Mid Positions:Middle position consists of two positions starting to the immediate left of UTG+1.
Late Positions: These are some of the best positions on the table. The players seated in these positions need to act the last. Cutoff, hijack and dealer positions come under this category..
Small Blind: First person to act after post-flop rounds the player needs to bet 1/2 of BB as a forced bet. Seated immediate left to the dealer position.
Big Blinds:This is the second forced bet. Player on the immediate left of the Small Blind and the second left to the Dealer button posts this blind which is always double the Small Blind and hence known as “Big Blind”.
UTG The player seated on the immediate left of the big blind is known as UTG or “Under the Gun”. In pre-Flop rounds, UTG is the first one to act, therefore it is one of the difficult seats in the game to take the correct decisions.
Cut off:The player sitting immediately to the right of the dealer button is known as Cut off in poker. It is the second-best position in the hand of poker. It is called Cut off because this player has the advantage of bluffing, acting with a strong hand or raising the blinds being at a late position.
Hijack: The player sitting to the immediate right of the “cutoff” and second to the right of the dealer button is known as a “Hijack”.

Betting Limits

The betting limit is the maximum bet amount that is allowed in one single bet in a hand of poker. There are three types of limits in poker for betting in a hand:

No limit: There is no restriction on betting amount, users can choose to bet any amount starting from one BB to his/her total stack size in a single bet.
Pot Limit:The user can choose to bet from a range of amounts starting from one BB to the total pot size in that hand. In pot-limit max bet can be of pot size only.
Fixed Limit:The user can choose to bet from a range of amounts starting from one BB to the fixed size of the bet that is set while playing the game.

Hand Ranking

A player should know his hand strength to determine whether he should continue in the hand or fold. To know the strength, a player has to know the hand's ranks in poker with their order of ranking.

Poker Actions

1.Game action

Game action is the term for all the actions that a player can take while playing the game. Game actions in poker are:-

Call - It means that there is an active bet/raise going on and the player has to match that bet by calling to continue in a hand.
Check - It means that the user can pass the gaming action to another player without putting up any more chips in the pot.
Bet/Raise - Raise means wagering up any amount into the pot to increase the pot value either to start the action or to increase the raise amount above the raise of another player. Bet is the first raise of any betting round.
Fold - Fold means that the player voluntarily doesn’t want to be part of the current hand.
All In -It is a special case of raise or call where a player has committed all his/her stack chips to the pot therefore he will be part of the hand till the showdown and can’t be considered as a folded player.

Game actions are taken up by players in each betting round. These betting rounds or hand phases are:-

Preflop -Betting rounds which happen after the distribution of hole cards and putting up of blinds (Forced bets). In this round, the player has to decide his action based on his hole cards only.
Postflop -Betting rounds that happen after opening up the first three community cards ( Flop). In this round, the player has to decide his action based on his hole cards only.
Turn - Betting round that happens after opening up of the 4th community card (Turn).
River - Betting round that happens after opening up of the 5th community card (River).
Showdown -This is the final stage in a poker hand where the remaining players in the hand have to show their cards to decide who is the winner of the hand.

Variants of Poker

1. Hold'em

Hold’em is the most popular variant of the game worldwide and No-limit Hold’em (NLHE) is the most popular among all the Hold’em variants. Hold'em is played from a single deck between 2 to 9 players. Each player needs to make the best five-card combination (as per the hand ranking) to win the pot. You can use both of your hole cards to make your best hand. You can even use all five cards on the table i.e. “play the board” & use no hole cards at all.

In a Hold'em card game, every player on the table gets two cards (hole cards) that are not visible to other players. Five cards are revealed face-up on the table during the betting rounds which are termed "community cards". As per the strength of his cards, every player takes an action (a bet, raise, call, fold) on his turn to act. After the betting rounds, the players reveal their cards. The player with the best five-card hand as per the hand ranking rules wins the pot (the amount of money all players wager on the table during the betting rounds).

2. Omaha

Omaha 4

Omaha Poker is a poker game derived from Texas Hold’em poker. It puts skill to the test more than other poker game variants because each player is dealt 4 cards in the game out of which 2 and only 2 have to be used to make your best 5 card combination. The community cards open the same as Hold’em only but a player can use only 3 of them to make his best hand. Omaha’s most popular format is Omaha-4.
